La Serenissima
The Most Serene Republic of Venice, La Serenissima, was home to the most prolific composer of the 17th century, Barbara Strozzi, a woman of unusual talents and life experience. Writing for her own voice she explored the passion, anguish and treachery of love in music that reached every corner of Europe. We showcase her breathtaking cantatas alongside the works of her contemporary, Benedetto Ferrari, who made his mark in Venice as a composer/impresario in the new world of opera. This concert features special guest harpsichordist Susanna Baltensperger of Zurich.
